Probable Syllabus for 2025
Based on the previous year syllabi, the probable syllabus for the Screening Test (OMR-based Objective Type) at Bachelor Degree standard includes two papers: General Studies (Paper-I) and the respective engineering discipline (Paper-II). Below are the detailed syllabi:
Assistant Engineer (Civil)
- Paper-I: General Studies
- Current Events of National & International Importance.
- History of India & History of Assam.
- World Geography including India & Assam.
- Indian Economy, Indian National Movement.
- Mental Ability.
- Role and Impact of Science and Technology in India.
- Indian Polity, Political System in India.

- Paper-II: Civil Engineering
- Statics: Co-planar and multi-planar system, free body diagrams, centroid, second moment of plane figure and fundamental polygons, principle of virtual work suspension systems and centenary.
- Dynamics: Units and Dimensions, Gravitational and absolute systems, MKS & S.I. Unit.
- Kinematics: Rectilinear and Curvilinear motion, Relative motion, Instantaneous centre.
- Kinetics: Mass moment of inertia, simple harmonic motion, momentum and impulse equations of motion of rigid body rotating about a fixed axis.
- Strength of Materials: Homogeneous and isotropic media, stress and strain elastic constants, tension and compression in one direction riveted and welded joints, Compound Stresses, Principal stresses and principal strains, simple theories of failure. Bending moments and shear forced diagrams. Theory of bending, shear stresses distribution in cross section of beams. Deflection of beams. Analysis of laminated beams and non-prismatic structures. Theories of columns, middle-fourth rules. Three pinned arch analysis of simple frames, torsion of shafts combined bending direct and torsional stresses in shafts. Strain energy in elastic deformation, impact fatigue and creep.
- Soil Mechanics: Origin of soils, classification void ratio, moisture content permeability, compaction. Seepage: Construction of flow nets. Determination of shear strength parameters for different drainage and stress conditions-Tri-axial, unconfined and direct shear tests. Earth pressure theories-Rankine’s and Coulomb’s analytical and graphical methods, stability of slopes. Soil consolidation- Terzaghi’s theory for one dimensional consolidation, rate of settlement and ultimate settlement, effective stress pressure distribution in soils, soil stabilization. Foundations-Bearing capacity of footings, Piles, Wells, Sheet piles.
- Fluid Mechanics: Properties of fluids. Fluid Statics: Pressure at a point, force on plane and curved surface, buoyancy and stability of floating and submerged bodies, dynamics of fluid flow, Laminar and turbulent flow, equation of continuity energy and momentum equations, Bernoulli’s theorem. Flow vortices. Flow net. Fluid flow measurement.
- Surveying: General principles, sign convention surveying instruments and their adjustment, recording of survey observations, plotting of maps reductions, errors and their adjustments. Measurement of distances of directions and heights, correction to measure length and barring, correction for local attractions, measurement of horizontal and vertical angles, levelling operations, refraction and curve corrections. Chain and compass survey, theodolite and tacheometric traversing, traverse computation; plane table survey, solution of two and three points problems, contour surveying, setting out directional grades & type of curves, setting out of curves and excavations for building foundations.
Assistant Engineer (Mechanical)
- Paper-I: General Studies (Same as above)
- Paper-II: Mechanical Engineering
- Statics: Simple application of equilibrium equations.
- Dynamics: Simple applications of equations of motion, simple harmonic motion, work-energy, power.
- Theory of Machines: Simple examples of links and mechanism, Classification of gears, standard gear tooth profiles wheel types of governors, static(s) and dynamic balancing. Simple examples of vibration of bars, Whirling of shafts.
- Mechanics of Solids: Stress strain, Hooke’s Law, elastic moduli, bending moments and shearing force diagrams for beams, Simple bending and torsion of beams. Spring, Thin walled cylinders. Mechanical properties and material testing.
- Manufacturing Science: Mechanics of metal cutting tool life economics of machining cutting, tool materials. Basic machining processes, types of machine tools, transfer lines, Shearing drawing spinning, rolling forging extrusion. Different types of casting and welding methods.
- Production Management(s): Design and time study, motion, economy and work space design, operation and flow process charts, Product design and constant selection of manufacturing process, Break even analysis, Site Selection of equipment for job, Shop and Mass production, Dulling dispatching, Routing.
- Thermodynamics: Heat, work and temperature, First and Second Laws of thermodynamics, Carnot Rankine, Otto and Diesel Cycles.
- Fluid Mechanics: Hydrostatics, Continuity equation, Bernoulli’s theorem, Flow through pipes, Discharge measurement, Laminar and Turbulent flow, Concept of boundary layer.
- Heat Transfer: One dimensional steady, state conduction through walls and cylinders, Fins. Concepts of thermal boundary layer, Heat transfer coefficient, Combined heat transfer, Coefficient, Heat ex-changers.
- Energy Conversion: Compression and spark ignition engines, Compressors. Fans and Blowers, Hydraulic pumps and turbines, Thermal turbo machines, Boilers, Flow of steam through nozzles, Layout of power plants.
- Environmental Control: Refrigeration cycles, refrigeration equipment, its operation and maintenance. Important refrigerants, Psychometrics comfort, Cooling and dehumidification.
Assistant Engineer (Chemical)
- Paper-I: General Studies (Same as above)
- Paper-II: Chemical Engineering
- Cement: Types, Portland cement and special types of cement.
- Processes and Process Variables: Mass and volume, mole and molecular weight, choosing a basis, flow rate, chemical composition, density and specific gravity, concentration, pressure temperature.
- Properties and Corrosion of Material: Electrical and magnetic properties of materials – chemical, thermal and technological properties of materials – corrosion, theories of corrosion – control and prevention of corrosion.
- Metals: Engineering materials – Ferrous metals – Iron and steel, iron-carbon equilibrium diagram. Non-Ferrous metals and alloys – Aluminum, copper, zinc, lead, nickel and their alloys with special reference to the application in chemical industries.
- Fluid Flow Phenomena: Velocity field, laminar flow, velocity gradient and rate of shear, Eddie viscosity, viscosity and momentum flux, shear stress field, Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, Bingham model, ostwald-de Waele model of non-Newtonian fluid, turbulent flow, Reynold’s experiments, flow in boundary layer, laminar and turbulent flow in boundary layer, transition from laminar to turbulent flow- Reynold’s number, boundary layer separation and wake formation.
- Basic Equation of Fluid Flow: Stream lines and stream tubes, average velocity, mass velocity, integral equation of flow- Euler’s equation of motion, momentum equation for one dimensional flow under steady state condition, the Bernoulli’s equation, its application to pumps, blowers, turbines etc.
- Flow of Incompressible Fluid in Conduits: Flow of incompressible fluids in pipes, boundary layer formation in straight tube, laminar flow of Newtonian fluids, Hagen-Poiseuille equation, laminar flow of non-Newtonian fluids, velocity distribution for turbulent flow, average velocity, relation between maximum and average velocity, application of dimensional analysis to fluid flow problems friction factor, pipe roughness, loss of head due to friction, bends, fittings etc.
- Sedimentation: Gravitational sedimentation- Fine suspensions- Coarse suspensions – Solids flux in batch sedimentation – The Kynch theory of sedimentation – thicker, Centrifugal separation – behavior of liquids in centrifuge basket fluid pressure – sedimentation in a centrifugal field – separation of two immiscible liquids – centrifugal equipment.
- Filtration: The theory of filtration – relation between thickness of cake and volume of filtrate-flow of liquid through the cloth-flow of filtrate through the cloth and cake combined, compressible filter cakes, Filtration practice, The leaf filter, rotary- blocking filtration, effect of particle sedimentation on filtration-delayed cake filtration-preliminary treatment of slurries before filtration-washing of filter cake, Filtration equipment. Filtration in a centrifuge, Filtration calculations.
- Mixing and Agitation: Agitation of liquids – Purpose of agitation-agitation equipment-Impellers-Flow patterns in agitation vessels recirculation velocity gradients in agitated vessels-power correlations for specific impellers-effect of system geometry-calculation of power consumption.
- Water Pollution:
- General: Regulations on the discharge of industrial pollutants in water/threshold limits. Types of waste water, sources of pollutants, classification of pollutants. Site selection, sampling, preservation, water quality parameters and significance, monitoring, determination of iBOD and COD. Dissolved Oxygen balance in water, self purification of a water system (Critical deficit of a runoff).
- Some fundamental aspects of microbiology as applied to pollution control.
- Control of Water Pollution: Basic approach to solve the problem. Primary, secondary and tertiary treatment of waste water, clarification, sludge disposal.
